Mamasol Association believes that all women deserve childbirth care that is safe, satisfying, respects human dignity, and promotes women’s whole health and self-determination. In 2000, a small group of activists who shared a vision to transform the existing medicalized, male-dominated model of childbirth formed a non-governmental, non-profit organization (originally called Asociación Primal).

On International Women’s Health Day in 2001, we launched our campaign for the Humanization of Childbirth in Costa Rica  (Humanización del Parto y del Nacimiento), by producing and disseminating informative brochures, media releases and presentations about women’s human rights in childbirth and current research evidence concerning routine obstetric procedures.   Since that time, we continue to work tirelessly on a variety of projects which we hope will help make change.

The pdf article below is a Mamasol article that was published in the journal Midwifery Today, in September 2009.  The article highlights 2 extraordinary Traditional Midwives, one from Nicaragua and the other from El Salvador, who work tirelessly caring for the women and families of their villages.
